{"id":308,"date":"2020-07-05T19:24:28","date_gmt":"2020-07-05T09:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the-six-bardos.org\/?page_id=308"},"modified":"2020-07-05T19:24:30","modified_gmt":"2020-07-05T09:24:30","slug":"karma-law-of-causality","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/the-six-bardos.org\/index.php\/karma-law-of-causality\/","title":{"rendered":"Karma: Law of Causality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The world\u2019s great religions agree that a kind and helpful life will lead to a happy and peaceful existence after death, whereas a hateful and harmful one will bring harsh consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christianity, for example, extols good works and acts of charity, and Judaism urges the performance of good deeds commanded by the Torah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buddhists speak of merits, which we accumulate by cultivating positive thoughts and deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These and other traditions accept that <em>a natural law of causation operates in our universe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Karma<\/em> is the word that Buddhists use for this law, which governs every event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Every mental and physical action initiated by mental volition becomes a cause that precipitates an individual effect as the result<\/em>; Buddhism, in particular, teaches in great detail what exact consequences will follow from what specific acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, the patterns of positive thoughts, emotions, words, and deeds cause happiness, while negative mental and physical actions cause suffering \u2013 the events of life\u2019s cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All our destructive emotions, as well as our habitual mental concepts and patterns of thought, are rooted in what Buddhism calls <em>grasping at \u201cself\u201d and the dualistic notion of subject and object<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated by Nagarjuna, one of the great philosophers of Buddhism: \u201cAll beings have come from grasping at \u2018self.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is, <em>the mind\u2019s tendency to grasp at and become attached to objects of thought and perception<\/em> is the very cause of our coming into existence in the world of duality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grasping at self is the mind\u2019s way of perceiving mental objects by apprehending them as truly existing entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mental objects<\/em> include all the phenomena that arise in our awareness, such as \u201cmyself,\u201d \u201cyou,\u201d \u201che,\u201d \u201cshe,\u201d \u201cmoney,\u201d or \u201ctable,\u201d as well as ideas, feelings, and sensations such as \u201cpain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as we have grasped a mental object and held on to it as real and solid, we have formed a subject-object duality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then comes the concept of liking or disliking the mental object, and that tightens the mental grip of grasping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end there is the feeling of excitement or pain, full of stress and pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Buddhist view, \u201cself\u201d includes \u201cme\u201d and \u201cmine,\u201d but <em>it also encompasses all phenomena arising in our consciousness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, according to the highest understanding of Buddhism, <em>there is no \u201cself\u201d that truly exists as a solid, fixed, unchanging entity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our grasping attitude is thus based on <em>delusion<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, because we are in the grip of karma, our delusory thinking and behaviour result in pain and suffering that are all too real to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>That cycle of grasping goes on repeating itself continuously as the causal order, the karmic law of life<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It <em>produces and enflames the afflicting emotions<\/em> (Skt. <em>klesha<\/em>) of confusion, hatred, miserliness, greed, jealousy, arrogance, and fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These afflicting emotions rooted in grasping at self are the causes of <em>rebirth<\/em>, while positive states of mind are the means of <em>liberation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changing theaters of life, death, and after death take place neither by choice nor by chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one else has created them for us. They are reflections and reactions of our own <em>thoughts<\/em>, <em>words<\/em>, and <em>deeds<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, we must train our minds and practice steadily to secure a happy and peaceful death and rebirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: Based on Thondup, Tulku. <em>Peaceful Death, Joyful Rebirth: A Tibetan Buddhist Guidebook<\/em>.
