The following is an alternate translation of the root verses of the six bardos:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when the bardo of birth<\/strong> is dawning upon me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will abandon laziness for which life has no time,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

enter the undistracted path of study<\/em>, reflection<\/em> and meditation<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

making projections and mind the path, and realize the three k\u0101yas<\/em>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

now that I have once attained a human body,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

there is no time on the path for the mind to wander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when the bardo of dreams<\/strong> is dawning upon me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will abandon the corpse-like sleep of careless ignorance<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and let my thoughts enter their natural state without distraction;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

controlling and transforming dreams<\/em> in luminosity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will not sleep like any animal<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but unify completely sleep and practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when the bardo of sam\u0101dhi-meditation<\/strong> dawns upon me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will abandon the crowd of distractions and confusions<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and rest in the boundless state<\/em> without grasping or disturbance;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

firm in the two practices: visualization<\/em> and complete<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at this time of meditation, one-pointed, free from activity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will not fall into the power of confused emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when the bardo of the moment before death<\/strong> dawns upon me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will abandon all grasping<\/em>, yearning<\/em> and attachment<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

enter undistracted into clear awareness<\/em> of the teaching,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and eject my consciousness into the space of unborn mind;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as I leave this compound body of flesh and blood<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will know it to be a transitory illusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when the bardo of dharmat\u0101<\/strong> dawns upon me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will abandon all thoughts of fear and terror<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will recognize whatever appears as my projection<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and know it to be a vision of the bardo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

now that I have reached this crucial point,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will not fear the peaceful and wrathful ones, my own projections<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now when the bardo of becoming<\/strong> dawns upon me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will concentrate my mind one-pointedly<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and strive to prolong the results of good karma<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

close the womb-entrance and think of resistance;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

this is the time when perseverance<\/em> and pure thought<\/em> are needed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

abandon jealousy<\/em>, and meditate on the guru with his consort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With mind far off, not thinking of death\u2019s coming,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

performing these meaningless activities,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

returning empty-handed now would be complete confusion;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the need is recognition, holy dharma,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

so why not practise dharma at this very moment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the mouths of siddhas come these words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do not keep your guru\u2019s teaching in your heart<\/p>\n\n\n\n

will you not become your own deceiver?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
