{"id":57,"date":"2020-06-07T00:54:07","date_gmt":"2020-06-07T00:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the-six-bardos.org\/?page_id=57"},"modified":"2020-08-09T08:06:17","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T22:06:17","slug":"the-six-bardos","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/the-six-bardos.org\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bardo Teachings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The purpose of this website is to present <em><strong>an overview of the six bardos<\/strong><\/em>, as presented in Tibetan Buddhism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best-known explanation of the bardos is the <em>Great Liberation Through Hearing in the Bardo<\/em>, which provides a complete and precise explanation of what happens in the bardos, as well as what we can do to deal with it and what opportunities there are for liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This most widely known set of teachings dealing with the bardos is commonly referred to in the West as the <em>Tibetan Book of the Dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A treasure text composed in the eighth century by Padmasambhava of Oddiyana, and later discovered in the fourteenth century by the great treasure revealer Karma Lingpa, the&nbsp;<em>Great Liberation Through Hearing in the Bardo<\/em> is an extraordinary compendium of precise and detailed knowledge and instruction pertaining to the bardos \u2013 the intermediate states of existence between life and death. Woodstock, New York: KTD Publications, 2007.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been said that <strong>the whole of the Buddha\u2019s doctrine could be summarized in the teaching on the <em>six bardos<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddhadharma is vast and profound, and the many approaches of the various vehicles and cycles of teaching comprise an inconceivable wealth of instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For those who wish to attain the primordial citadel of buddhahood in the course of a single human life, the practice of these teachings is presented within the framework of the six bardos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What, therefore, is a bardo? A bardo is a state that is \u201cneither here nor there\u201d; by definition it is something that comes \u201cin between,\u201d an intermediate state. The six bardos are: (1) the natural bardo of the present life; (2) the hallucinatory bardo of dreaming; (3) the bardo of meditative absorption; (4) the painful bardo of dying; (5) the luminous bardo of ultimate reality; and (6) the karmic bardo of becoming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Source: Based on Dudjom Rinpoche. <em>Counsels from My Heart<\/em> (Kindle Locations 692-698). This indirectly ties in with how each of the six bardos are intervals of possibility. (All photos \u2013 unless otherwise credited \u2013 were personally taken and may be freely downloaded.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u2014ooo000ooo\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">From Here to Enlightenment: Four Websites<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This website forms one out of a series of four websites with overall themes in a sequence as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Path<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lamrimpath.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.lamrimpath.org\/<\/a>&nbsp; This website presents the stages of the Buddhist path to enlightenment or awakening, based on the&nbsp;<em>lamrim<\/em>&nbsp;genre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>lamrim<\/em> genre divides beings according to three levels of spiritual motivation in relation to the teachings on the Path: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) Those of <em>lesser motivation<\/em>, who aim to achieve rebirth in the higher states within&nbsp;<em>samsara<\/em>,&nbsp;as human beings or as gods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) Those of a <em>middle motivation<\/em>, who seek liberation from&nbsp;<em>samsara<\/em>&nbsp;for themselves alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) Those of <em>greater motivation<\/em>, who are motivated by the desire to lead all beings to perfect buddhahood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practice<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/ngondro-practices.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/ngondro-practices.org\/<\/a>&nbsp; This website presents an explanation of the preliminary practices in Tibetan Buddhism.
